Skills are literally special abilities or capacities of your player charater and they can be used to deal untold amounts of damage against their opponents in combat.
In Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (also short for VSoH), spells can really help your play character have the advantage of winning the battle against your adversaries throughout your exciting adventure in the world of Teron, while they can affect everything in the game from combat, healing, weapon mastery, beast mastery, casting spells, crafting, harvesting, diplomacy, to some other things.
Skills are normally capped based on your current level and class in most cases. Every 10 points of a skill corresponds to a level.
